How to Treat Autism Spectrum Disorder Without Drugs

Written By North Florida Spine and Wellness Institute on January 15, 2018

More parents than ever are receiving an autism diagnosis for their children these days, but despite its prevalence, the condition still isn’t well understood. Some parents think the only solution for helping their children fit into the world is to treat them with a cocktail of daily medications, but drug-free autism treatment is also an option.

If you’re interested in learning if natural autism treatment makes sense for your situation, keep reading to find out.

What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

ASD (autism spectrum disorder) is the name given a range of developmental disorders that have a “spectrum” of symptoms and disability levels. For this reason, it’s hard to generalize ASD symptoms. However, most patients have some degree of the following characteristics:

  • Ongoing social problems and difficulty communicating
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Narrow interests and activities
  • Difficulty functioning in social situations like school or work
  • Hypo or hyper sensitivity to varying stimuli

Due to the range of symptom severity, some ASD patients have only minor social disabilities while others are more severely limited.

Natural Autism Spectrum Treatment

The root of Autism Spectrum Disorder is Functional Disconnection Syndrome. Diagnosing and treating this syndrome involves a two-step process.

Step 1: Remove any environmental factors that can be causing the condition. This can include chronic infections, food allergies and sensitivities, sources of environmental toxins and lengthy screen time.

Step 2: Look for neurological developmental weaknesses. We are all born with primitive reflexes that help us stay alive, but these are usually lost before we turn one. However, retaining these primitive reflexes until later in life can impede higher level brain development and lead to ASD symptoms for children. There are at-home integration exercises you can do to assess these retained reflexes and help your child interact with her environment.

Once you have a good understanding of the environmental factors that are responsible for the ASD symptoms, you can treat them with functional medicine and hemisphere integrationsd therapy. This is a system of evaluating health by examining the autonomic nervous system through surface neurological reflexes, diet evaluation, blood and saliva analysis, and physical examinations.

It’s also possible to treat developmental weaknesses with neurologically based exercises (considered a form of sensory stimulation) that targets the weakly connected parts of the brain and helps it to strengthen and balance out.
