Treating ADHD Without Drugs: What You Need to Know

Written By North Florida Spine and Wellness Institute on December 18, 2017

When you get the message that your child is diagnosed with ADHD, you know that you’re about to embark on a long journey to manage their side effects so that your child can live a calmer, more successful life.

But does that necessarily mean medication?

While medication is the top treatment option for ADHD and is beneficial for the majority of cases, some parents prefer not to use it. The good news is that other ADHD treatment options offer a more natural alternative.

What Is ADHD?

Technically called attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, ADHD is one of the most common childhood mental disorders. Symptoms usually include an inability to pay attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Currently, an estimated 5% of children have ADHD, most of whom are diagnosed when they reach school age. The condition is also more common in boys than girls.

Understanding Natural ADHD Treatment

The root cause of ADHD is Functional Disconnection Syndrome. With this understanding, there is a two-step process in place for diagnosing and treating the condition.

Step 1: Remove all environmental factors: This can include sources of environmental toxins, processed foods, artificial food dyes and colors, and lengthy screen time among others. In some cases, food sensitivities can also be responsible.

Step 2: Seek signs of neurological developmental weaknesses: Everyone is born with primitive reflexes that keep us alive, but we start to lose them as we grow up and the brain develops. Retaining primitive reflexes until an older age can pose problems for higher level brain development and lead to ADHD in school children. Delayed brain development is often an indication of these primitive reflexes.

Treating Functional Disconnection Syndrome can include clinic nutrition, which is a way to evaluate physical health by looking closely at diet, the autonomic nervous system, physical examinations, and even blood and saliva samples. Neurological based exercises are also a great way to treat developmental weaknesses because it helps integrate primitive reflexes to strengthen and balance out weakly connected parts of the brain.
